In 1964, Steve Washuta incorporated Modern Disposal Services as a way to expand his seasonal paving company into a business that could provide a steady source of income for his family. As the region’s industrial base grew, Mr. Washuta’s dedication and strong work ethic helped his new business develop from a humble two-truck operation in Western New York into the 20th largest waste removal company in the United States.
Today, Modern is still a privately owned waste removal company. We employ over 500 hundred people in Western New York, as well as Southern Ontario, Canada.
Modern is committed to the most innovative and responsible methods of materials management and recycling. It’s simple – we accept nothing less.
We further our commitment by providing exceptional customer service & giving back to the communities we serve. We’re all in this together–to sustain, recycle and reuse the planet’s limited resources.
As your local waste removal company, we take that responsibility seriously.
SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING
Modern makes recycling simple. With Modern’s single stream technology simply place your paper, plastic containers, glass bottles and metal cans into one convenient recycling container.
We do the messy sorting, keeping your areas cleaner, reducing your trash and freeing your employees for more important tasks!
To see all of the items you can now include in our single stream program, view our “What can I recycle” guide.
Placing electronic waste in your trash containers is illegal in New York State. It can also be costly because of potential identity theft issues or release of sensitive data.
Drop off your electronics at Modern’s Registered Electronic Collection site at:
3675 Jeffrey Boulevard
Blasdell, New York 14219
New York State law requires electronic manufacturers to provide free electronic recycling. Also, for a list of local registered electronic recycling centers and collection sites visit: http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/65583.html.

Modern Landfill INC.
Environmental Excellence Award
In 2005, Modern Landfill received an Environmental Excellence Award from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for its project that “developed a process to convert the gas generated by the landfill to electricity that powers the facility, supplies the power grid, and provides heat and light to the green house complex growing hydroponic tomatoes. The gas from Modern Landfill is used to generate 5.6 megawatts of electricity by Model City Energy that is sold back to the New York power grid. In addition, the heat generated in the process of burning the gas in Caterpillar internal combustion engines creates waste heat, which is also captured in another recovery process. This heat and a small fraction of the electricity generated are then used to heat and light an adjacent 7.5 acre hydroponic greenhouse complex, “H2Gro”, where vine-ripened tomatoes are grown and profitably marketed. The facility’s fugitive landfill gas emissions have been reduced by 85%.” – NYSDEC Pollution Prevention Evaluation Program, 36 Month Report, March 2009.
