Recycle Unwanted Election Signs

Due to the large number of contested races this Election Day, Libertyville officials arranged for a recycling dumpster to collect the many campaign signs posted around town.

Mayor Terry Weppler said he first saw the concept in a news article about Lombard and decided to ask Groot Industries to do the same for Libertyville.

The dumpster will be outside the village’s public works building, 600 North Ave., for seven days following the April 4 election, according to Weppler. He said the metal bars must be removed from the signs, but both can be put in the dumpster separately.

“I have always hated seeing campaign signs left up weeks after an election and want to see people pull them up once the campaign is over,” Weppler told Pioneer Press in an email. “I think there are more signs this time than I have ever seen before. Spring flowers will look much more colorful in people’s yards than campaign signs.”

Now that he has four grandchildren Weppler said he’s begun to think about the world he’s leaving them and wants to avoid landfills when possible. He said trying to get election signs into regular garbage bins is difficult and having a dumpster exclusively for the signs should be appealing to candidates and their supporters.

Weppler said Groot Industries is not charging for the extra dumpster because they admit to having problems with metal bars clogging garbage cans on collection days and welcome a solution to the problem.
