4 Ways to Recycle Furniture
Furniture can be challenging to throw away on a curbside, so recycling and reusing is an appealing option for many people interested in upgrading the look of their living room or bedroom.
While a recycling center will receive, break down and process old furniture, there are several different options when looking to discard large couches, chairs and beds.
Repair it.
Using inexpensive materials a broken piece of furniture may still be able to be fixed. Reupholstering the fabric could also help to extend the life and appeal of an older sofa or chair. If you’re looking to take on this project yourself, Pinterest is a great resource for learning these kinds of skills. Another option would be to take it to an upholsterer to take care of this task for you.
Sell it.
Having yard sales can help to promote recycling within a community, and whoever purchases it will also be responsible for hauling it away. Consignment stores, CraigsList, Swapping communities on Facebook and Freecycle.org are other options. (Be aware that sometimes transporting a large piece of furniture can present a few challenges.)
Donate it.
Thrift stores accepts most furniture that is in good condition (except mattresses). Simply drop it off during business hours. Upon request, a receipt will also be provided that can be used as a write-off on taxes for next year. If there are several large items to be donated, some thrift stores will come and pick it up for you as well.
Call a recycling service.
Locate the nearest recycling center and find out what the policies are. There may be specific instructions to ensure a safe and easy pick up, like taping doors shut and securing any loose objects.
