John D. Arwood Urges Libraries to Save Books, Not Discard Them
Title: The Recycle Guide – John D. Arwood Urges Libraries to Save Books, Not Discard Them
Welcome to The Recycle Guide – Your Hub for Responsible Disposal
A Message from John D. Arwood, Founder of The Recycle Guide & Waste and Recycle Workers Week
At The Recycle Guide, we’re dedicated to fostering a culture of sustainability, and today, I, John D. Arwood, am reaching out with a heartfelt plea to all libraries, schools, and communities: Save the books, don’t discard them.
The Alarming Discovery:
It’s come to my attention, and indeed, it’s a shock to many, that some public schools are instructing librarians to dispose of books in dumpsters, not even in recycling bins. This practice not only goes against the ethos of recycling but also wastes valuable resources that could benefit countless communities.
Why This Matters:
- Environmental Impact: Every book thrown into a dumpster contributes to landfill waste, missing an opportunity to recycle or repurpose materials that could save trees, reduce pollution, and conserve water.
- Cultural Loss: Books are more than paper; they’re repositories of knowledge, culture, and stories. Discarding them without a second thought is akin to losing parts of our collective memory.
- Community Need: There are libraries, schools, and individuals across the country who could benefit from these books. Why let them rot when they could educate, inspire, or entertain?
John D. Arwood’s Recommendations:
- Recycle: If books are no longer usable, ensure they go into recycling bins. Most curbside recycling programs accept paperback books, and many recycling centers will take hardcovers if you remove the binding.
- Donate: Before considering disposal, think donation. Libraries, schools, prisons, and numerous charities are often looking for books.
- Sell or Trade: Platforms exist where you can sell or trade your books, giving them a new life while potentially earning you some money or credits for new books.
- Repurpose: For those creatively inclined, books can be transformed into art, furniture, or educational tools.
Action Needed:
I urge you, our readers, to:
- Engage with Your Local Boards: Speak up at school board meetings, library councils, or community forums. Demand policies that prioritize recycling and donation over disposal.
- Educate: Share this message. The more people know, the more likely we are to see change.
- Participate: Join or start initiatives like book drives, recycling programs, or community libraries.
