Orange County Waste and Recycling, in partnership with Discovery Cube Orange County and Angels Baseball, recently announced the winners of its fifth annual Eco Challenge Poster Contest, themed “Battling for a Green Planet.”

Students ages 8-14 were encouraged to submit posters promoting the need to keep green waste and food waste out of landfills. Entries were judged on originality, visual clarity, relevance to theme, artwork and effectiveness of message.

The contest, which received close to 500 submissions, had five winners, one from each Orange County supervisorial district. All will be recognized in a pre-game on-field ceremony Sept. 15 at Angel Stadium and get their own Angels “bat kid experience” on dates to be determined. This year’s winners:

Chelsey Ruiz, 14, Garden Grove – first district, Supervisor Andrew Do
Sophie Rafle, 8, Costa Mesa – second district, Supervisor Michelle Steel
Maxwell Ngo, 9, Tustin – third district, Supervisor Todd Spitzer
Angela Flores, 9, Placentia – fourth district, Supervisor Shawn Nelson
